Members of the media are invited to the official launch of the South East England Development Agency (SEEDA) funded project entitled SPaCE (Support for Palliative Care [in radiotherapy] using E-health) at the Continuing Education Centre, University of Surrey on Thursday, 12 October at 12:00 - 2.00 p.m.

The project will see the University of Surrey work in collaboration with Docobo Limited, St Luke's Cancer Centre, The Beacon and St Catherine's and Princess Alice Hospices. The project aims to redesign and develop Docobo's commercial e-health technology, the HealthHUB, to improve the care and quality of life for cancer patients receiving palliative radiotherapy, thereby enabling cancer patients to live at home for longer.

The project benefits will include improved patients' quality of life, the development of an evidence base on which to develop future individualised patient healthcare, and an increase in the efficiency of the public healthcare system.

Palliative Care is defined as the active compassionate care of the chronically and terminally ill, primarily directed towards improving the quality of life at a time when the goal is not cure. Palliative radiotherapy amounts to 40% of all radiotherapy delivered within cancer care. The emphasis of palliative care is on the control of pain and symptoms, and meeting physical, emotional, spiritual, social and cultural needs. It is multidisciplinary in its approach, encompassing the person, family, caregivers and the community in its scope and extends to include grief and bereavement.
