A leading medical team claims to have solved the mystery of Britain's fourfold rise in cases of childhood autism - and it has nothing to do with the MMR vaccine.

Two American academics say they have proved that the rise over the past decade is explained by a change in the way doctors diagnose behavioural disorders.

Their research flies in the face of the belief - by a small number of scientists - that new cases are linked to the single MMR jab, introduced in 1988.

It is the first study to provide a valid alternative explanation for the rise in autism and provides the government with concrete evidence to persuade parents that the MMR is safe.
