A new microbiology textbook from ASM Press pays more than just lip service to microbes in the mouth. Oral Microbiology and Immunology focuses primarily on the knowledge and understanding of the oral ecosystem and its unique role in human health and disease.

"Microbial diseases of the oral cavity, such as tooth decay or gum disease are among the most common infectious diseases of humans. Despite their importance, most microbiology textbooks pay scant attention to oral microorganisms. This book seeks to redress the balance," says editor Richard Lamont of the University of Florida College of Dentistry.

Intended for dental students, dental practitioners, and health care professionals, the book cohesively details the ecology, virulence, molecular biology, and immunogenicity of oral bacteria, viruses, and fungi and examines their interface with host cells and secretions.

Beginning with a chapter on general microbiology, the first section on general principles details the oral environment, describes the immune system and its response to oral microorganisms, and addresses genetics and applied molecular biology of oral microorganisms. The second section examines specific oral diseases, from caries and fungal infections to periodontal and systemic disease. The final section of the book discusses disease treatment and infection control.

"If you are a dental student, a dental practitioner, or involved in any health-related discipline, this book will provide you with a complete resource on oral microbiology and oral immunology," says Lamont.

Oral Microbiology and Immunology can be purchased through ASM Press online at http://estore.asm.org or through other online retailers.
