The aromatic bark can lower blood sugar, triglycerides and cholesterol levels, as well as improve insulin functioning, particularly in Type 2 diabetics, researchers have found. Richard Anderson, lead scientist at the Human Nutrition Research Center in Beltsville, Md. (USA), calls its medicinal properties the most significant nutritional discovery in 25 years.

'I don't know of anything else,' he said, other than drugs, 'that can change glucose, triglycerides and cholesterol levels nearly so much.'

The most recent study, which appears in the December issue of the journal Diabetes Care, showed that, after 40 days, 30 diabetics who had taken 1 to 6 grams of cinnamon extract daily reduced their risk factors for cardiovascular disease.

Specifically, their mean fasting glucose fell 18 percent to 29 percent, their triglycerides 25 percent to 30 percent, their LDL ('bad') cholesterol 7 percent to 27 percent and their total cholesterol 12 percent to 26 percent.

Only a little cinnamon was necessary, said Anderson, who helped conduct the study. A 30-person placebo group showed no change.

Other experts say they're reserving judgment until more extensive studies on humans confirm the results.

If Anderson's findings are confirmed by wider studies, the spice could help fight the soaring U.S. rate of Type 2 diabetes. Also known as adult-onset diabetes, it afflicts an estimated 16 million people in the United States.

Cinnamon

How long did it take for you to see a difference in symptoms. I have been eating a stick of cinnamon for three days with a small improvement in frequency. Can you elaborate. Anyone else with success ?

Cinnamon And UC

2nd UC flare since diagnosis in 04. Pain this time. Blood and tissue in stool. Cut sugar out again and no improvement in 8 wks. For some reason I was feeling cinnamon this morning and it almost instantly soothed my gut. Had to google to see if there was anything to it. Glad to see others have noted improvement. I'll stick with it.

Cinnamon anti inflammitory properties

I have just heard of the anti inflammitory properties of cinnamon. I have just commenced taking it (ground on toast twice daily) in the hope that my ulcerative colitis will improve. I came across your article by accident and am wondering if your symptoms have improved more 6 months on. Please give me an update if you read this. Joy

Cinnamon in Ulcerative Colitis

Hi, I am a medical doctor (specialist in Anaesthesiology) working in United Kingdom. I have been suffering with Ulcerative Colitis for the last 12 years. Taking Asacol (5 aminosalcylic acid) did not help much in relieving blood in stools or frequency of motions(4-5 times).

3 months back started to eat Cinnamon bark fo get rid of it from my kitchen shelf( as a child I liked it very much). To my surprise, my U.C has got better. Normal stools, well formed and no blood. I eat 2 inches long/ one inch wide bark

However, it is very spicy to eat in large amount, so I eat it with a banana or any thing that dilutes its spicy taste.

I also suffer with type 2 diabetes (effect of prednisolone Rx. initially for UC). So hoping that Cinnamon might reduce the sugar level from 8 mmols to 6mmols.

I hope someone might benifit from eating Cinnamon for UC..
