A new survey has revealed that almost half the population of the United Kingdom has high cholesterol levels. This makes them more vulnerable to heart disease.
According to the UK National Diet and Nutrition Survey, 48% of men and women have levels higher than 5.2mmol/L.
- 12% of men, 11% of women had cholesterol readings of 6.5 - 7.8 mmol/L.
- As people got older their readings went up. 59% of men, 75% of women aged 50-64 had readings above 5.3mmol/L.
- Today 25% of men, 20% of women are obese (8% and 12% in 1987).
- 41% of all men and 33% of all women are overweight.
- 35% of men, 26% of women exercised enough. This is surprising as most of these people (70%) though that they were exercising enough.
