A new study followed 32,826 healthy women for ten years. The women had given blood samples at the beginning of the ten years. At the end of the ten years 698 women had Type II diabetes.
These 698 women had much higher levels of iron in their blood at the beginning of the ten years.
This could lead the way to a new type of test doctors could perform on patients. Doctors may be able, one day, to tell patients whether they are (or will be) at risk of developing diabetes.
The doctors would also be able to tell which women should avoid iron supplements.
The findings appear in Wednesday's Journal of the American Medical Association.
