Combining a new immunomodulating cancer drug - lenalidomide - with monoclonal antibodies - galiximab (anti-CD80 antibody) and campath (anti-CD52 antibody) - appears to have significant anticancer activity for patients with B-cell lymphoma in preclinical studies conducted at Roswell Park Cancer Institute.

Nishita Reddy, MD, Department of Medicine, discussed the results of this study in a poster session at the 48th Annual Meeting & Exposition of the American Society of Hematology, in Orlando, FL.

This research builds on prior studies, in which Dr. Reddy and colleagues found that combining lenalidomide with IDEC-114 (anti-CD80 antibody) had a synergistic effect and may increase the antitumor effects of IDEC-114, and found synergy between lenalidomide and rituximab (anti-CD20 antibody).

To further evaluate the effects of lenalidomide on other monoclonal antibodies, investigators combined lenalidomide with galiximab (anti-CD80 antibody) and campath (anti-CD52 antibody). Again, the data showed that lenalidomide enhances the biological activity of these monoclonal antibodies which increases antitumor activity.

"These results appear to be a step toward meeting the urgent need to produce new strategies for treating B-cell lymphoma; treatments that have significantly increased antitumor activity and limited side effects," according to Dr. Reddy.

Dr. Reddy was selected to receive the 2006 Fellow of the Year Award from the faculty of the Fellow Oncology Research and Education Meeting. The award which is based on a national competitive process among hematology fellows, was presented to Dr. Reddy during a reception on Sunday, December 10th at The Peabody Orlando, International Drive.
