A top child nutrition specialist has said that children should avoid the Atkins diet. Professor Bruce Rengers said that children could suffer permanent physical and mental damage as a result of being on the diet.
He says that the brain needs glucose to function properly.
The Atkins low-carb diet starves the brain of glucose (the main source of energy for the brain).
When someone is on a low-carb diet his/her body takes the energy from ketones (a by-product of fat being broken down).
According to Professor Rengers, ketones have a dulling effect on the brain. He said that low-carb diets fool the body into thinking it is starving.

Children of the past
posted by Gayl Tueller on 12 Jul 2004 at 5:58 pmThen I wonder, what did children in ancient times eat, or even pioneer chidren? I'm sure they wouldn't have always had a plentiful source of fresh bread, veggies and fruit, and they did not have weight problems.
What about Native American children? At times all they had was venison, fowl and fish. Also, not all of the Atkins approach is strictly meat.
The lieftime maintenance incorporates a balanced plan consisting of certain types of fruits, veggies and grains. It's not as bad as it sounds on the surface, AND, my 12 year old loves the food. He says it makes him feel stronger. Getting children out from in front of the tv helps alot, too!
