A woman in Texas had given birth to a pair of twin girls, her own grandchildren. She was surrogate mother for her daughter-in-law.
Marianne Thoms, Levelland, Texas, USA has returned home three days after the birth of the girls.
The surrogate mother was delighted. She said her pregnancy went smoothly. The last time she had a baby had been twenty-eight years earlier.
Hospital officials said they did not know whether there were other cases of a surrogate mother giving birth to her own grandchildren.
Mrs Thoms volunteered for the role on behalf of her son Shawn Reed and his wife Traci, who could not give birth because of scarring to her uterus.
Shawn and Traci Reed underwent an in-vitro fertilisation procedure in San Antonio.
A doctor told them it would be best to find a family member to serve as a surrogate mother in order to avoid legal complications over custody of the children.
Mrs Thoms, a pilot, skydiver and scuba diver, stepped forward.
'This pregnancy was much more exciting than those adventures,' she said.
The twin girls, Sydney and Morgan, are still in the hospital but are in good health.
Thoms says she cannot wait to play with the grandchildren to whom she gave birth.

Unconditional Love
posted by Thelma on 8 Aug 2007 at 6:52 pmWhat a wonderful gift for the son and daughter in-law and such a sacrifice to give her body to this procedure! This dispels the "horrible Mother-in-law" syndrome and should now be labeled as the Wonderful Mother-in-Love!
