CMS on Friday in the Federal Register published the final version of a rule that transplant centers must follow to participate in Medicare, CQ HealthBeat reports. In a news release, CMS said that the rule combines all transplant center requirements and will help improve coordination among CMS, state survey agencies, the Health Resources and Services Administration, the Organ Procurement and Transplantation Network and the Scientific Registry of Transplant Recipients. Under the rule, transplant centers that seek to continue their participation in Medicare must submit requests for initial approval and subsequent requests every three years, CMS said. Acting CMS Administrator Leslie Norwalk said, "This rule improves the current transplant outcome requirements and strengthens the protection of the health and safety of patients and living donors." Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) said that the rule "seems to reflect a much stronger commitment by the executive branch to improving and ensuring accountability of the organ transplant system" (CQ HealthBeat, 3/26).
