People have been reportedly receiving letters from a hospital telling them that their partner has tested positive for HIV. They are told in the letter that they might also be infected with the virus.

These letters are fakes. They claim to be from Mount Sinai Hospital, New York (a prestigious hospital). The letters say that they are writing from the HIVAIDS Notification Service, says the New York Times.

Mount Sinai Hospital told the New York Times that they have no such department. They also said that they never tell people about their HIV test results by post.

Mount Sinai Hospital also said that they knew of no connections between the victims. They said the logo on the letters is not the one they use (it is not the same as theirs).

The New York Times said that the Manhattan District Attorney's office is investigating the matter.

Apparently something similar happened recently in Virginia. The way the letters were sent are similar enough the New York case to make people wonder whether the same person has been involved.
