The NPA board has mandated the organisation to move forward with a proposal to promote an annual national pharmacy "pitch to your PBC week."
Although recognising that community pharmacy should be working with PBC clusters year round the Association believes a themed week could focus the minds of commissioners and contractors and give impetus at a critical time in the NHS planning cycle.
Stephen Fishwick, NPA Head of NHS Service Development comments:
"We have been at the forefront of sending out the message to pharmacists that they should develop contacts with practice based commissioners. However, we recognise that this message competes with many other "must do" activities for pharmacists. We hope that intensified awareness raising during a designated week will lead to concerted activity locally."
Stephen adds:
"The NHS service development department will be launching a suite of PBC service proposal templates in the summer that should remove some of the pain of preparing a pitch. This supplements the PBC resources already available from the department."
The NPA will be discussing with colleagues in the other pharmacy bodies how they might get involved with this exercise.
