ADEA Awards Ceremony Honors Contributions To Dental Education, USA

The American Dental Education Association (ADEA) recognized the contributions of many dental educators, researchers, and students at the 2007 ADEA Annual Session held in New Orleans March 17-21, 2007.

Dr. Lavern J. Holyfield, Director of Faculty Development at the Baylor College of Dentistry and a 2007-08 ADEA Leadership Institute Fellow, is the inaugural Jeanne C. Sinkford Scholar in the ADEA Leadership Institute. The award, made possible by GlaxoSmithKline, the National Dental Association, and ADEA, supports a dental school faculty member from a minority group underrepresented in dental education who has been selected for the ADEA Leadership Institute. The honor comes with an award of $15,000 made possible by the three organizations.

Dr. Sinkford was the first woman dean of an American dental school, serving Howard University from 1975 to 1991. Dr. Sinkford is presently Associate Executive Director of the ADEA Center for Equity and Diversity, which focuses on recruitment and retention of women, underrepresented minorities, and low income students in the dental profession and academic dentistry.

ADEA President Dr. Kenneth L. Kalkwarf honored a several leaders with Presidential Citations for their service to ADEA. They are:

-- William W. Dodge, University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio

-- Kathleen S. Roth, American Dental Association
-- Abigail W. Gorman, American Dental Education Association
-- Judith S. Stavisky, The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation
-- Richard H. Carr, Jr., University of Nevada, Las Vegas (retired)

Lisa A. Tedesco, Ph.D., received the 2007 ADEA Distinguished Service Award. This award, given by the Board of Directors of the American Dental Education Association (ADEA), recognizes significant contributions to education, research, and ADEA. The ADEA/Colgate-Palmolive Allied Dental Educators Fellowship was awarded to Susan I. Duley, Clayton State University, and Rebecca S. Wilder, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

The ADEA/William J. Gies Foundation Education Fellowship was awarded to Cynthia C. Gadbury-Amyot, University of Missouri-Kansas City.

The ADEA/GlaxoSmithKline Sensodyne Excellence in Teaching award recipient was Neil S. Norton, Creighton University.

The ADEA Council of Students/VitalSource Technologies, Inc. Junior Faculty Award was given to Sharon K. Lanning, Virginia Commonwealth University.

The ADEA/VitalSource Technologies, Inc. Dental Education Award was given to Andrew I. Spielman, New York University.

The ADEA/Crest Oral-B Laboratories Scholarship for Dental Hygiene Students Pursuing Academic Careers was given to Tracy A. Brookshire and Melissa G. Efurd, both of the University of Missouri-Kansas City.

The ADEA/Sigma Phi Alpha Linda DeVore Scholarship was presented to Cynthia Ann Stegeman, University of Cincinnati.

ADEA/Listerine Preventive Dentistry Scholarships went to:

-- Marvin Baptiste, Columbia University
-- Anita Bhavani, Case School of Dental Medicine
-- Shannitta L. Bridgers, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill

-- Jocelyn Jeffries, New York University
-- Shokofeh Motlagh, University of Nevada, Las Vegas

The Journal of Dental Education 2006 Outstanding Manuscript Awards were presented to Mina H. Chung, University of Illinois at Chicago; Reem N. Haj-Ali, University of Missouri-Kansas City; Ajay S. Mahal, Harvard School of Public Health; James Merle Rogér, Marquette University; and Kristin Z. Victoroff, Case School of Dental Medicine.

The ADEA/Pfizer, Inc./Enid A. Neidle Scholar-in-Residence award is Georgia Dounis, University of Nevada, Las Vegas.

The ADEA Thomas F. Nowlin Award for Best Performance by a Section was shared by the ADEA Section on Anatomical Sciences and the ADEA Section on Gerontology and Geriatrics Education.

The first-ever ADEA/Zimmer Dental Implant Education Award was given to University of Oklahoma Department of Oral Implantology, represented by Nancy L. Jacobsen, Donald L. Mitchell, Joseph R. Cain, Joy Hasebe, Kathryn F. Miller, Robert E. Carson, and Steven M. Sullivan.

At the conclusion of the Awards Ceremony, ADEA announced the creation of two new awards, the ADEA/GSK Dental Hygiene Teaching Fellowships and the ADEA/IFDEA Orna Shanley Prize for Enhancing Access to Care. For more on these awards see separate releases on each.
