PBS has recently shot a feature story on the effect of the Transcendental Meditation technique on ADHD. We have just learned that it will air this May 25-27 weekend throughout the USA.
To find when it is airing this weekend in your city go to: www.pbs.org/ttc/schedule.html and enter your local zip code.
This 10 minute segment will appear on the program, "TO THE CONTRARY", a popular program for parents.
The segment is quite inspiring. PBS interviewed students at American University and the Kingsbury School who have ADHD and who are practicing the Transcendental Meditation technique. PBS also interviewed researchers Sarina Grosswald and Alarik Arenander.
If you have children or grandchildren who have ADHD you may find this program interesting.

posted by Edgar on 20 Jan 2012 at 11:59 amI too used to be an advocate of acupuncture. My views have changed most recently however.
For a good number of years I had a strong interest in studying acupuncture and traditional Chinese medicine. In the fall of last year, I had uprooted my family and moved to a new location to attend an acupuncture college for five years and receive my certification.
For several weeks while waiting to attend school, as classes had not commenced, I spent much time in prayer and did much research about the origins of acupuncture and the philosophy behind it.
Coupled along with that, I also read a short book on a Chinese Christians' experience with practising tai chi, and chi kung while living in China during the 80's and 90's.
My personal study of the subjects led me to understand that acupuncture points and meridians are based on Chinese Astrology. The 12 meridians that acupuncturists refer to, are based on the Chinese Zodiac and translate as the Jing Luo (經络) known in English as the ChingLo channels or simply channels or meridians.
As with many cultures of the time from the Mediterranean to Asia, there was a common belief that the Stars and Planets exhibited an effect on the human physique. This indicated that a person’s health and destiny are determined by the position of the Sun, the Moon, the 5 Planets and the apparition of comets, along with the person’s time of birth. In this worldview, each body segment corresponds to one of the 12 Houses of the Chinese zodiac system di zhi (地支) known in English as the Earthly Branches, and which consists of 12 two-hour (30°) divisions of the Ecliptic. Along the channels of the 12 meridians are positioned 360 acupoints. There is a direct correlation between the five elements in acupuncture and the five planets visible from earth.
This information was gathered from Ben Kavoussi's article "Astrology with Needles". His
research is credited solely to him. Ben has a Masters degree in Oriental Medicine and is a licensed acupuncturist in the U.S. His article can be read at:
sciencebasedmedicine.org/index.php/astrology-with-needles/
I had also stumbled across a book written by Hsiao Guang, a man who studied and practised chi kung (qigong, has mulitiple spellings) for many years, later to become a Christian. He states in his book, "I am a Christian who practiced qigong for many years. My experience with it reached to great depths and led me to comprehensive studies of its theory and practices, as well as to my acquaintance with all its related religions such as Taoism, Buddhism, Tibetan Buddhism, yoga and also astrology, martial arts and Chinese medicine. My experience with qigong also led me to practice to various extents of all the above religions. I have been an atheist, a theist, a devout qigong disciple, and finally a Christian. The process has been long and at one point seemed endless, but it is now past. I congratulate myself on accepting Jesus while I am still young. I also rejoice that, though life is short, I have found the meaning of life before life ends for me.
The name of the book is "Breaking Through the Barriers of Darkness: Recognizing the Cult of Qigong for What It Is". The book can be read online at chinaforjesus.com/resources/qigong/index.htm
Guang mentions in his book that he began studying qigong as a boy, being mesmerized by tales of kung fu masters having great powers, being able to perform supernatural feats using their chi. Guang and his parents suffered from health issues that were "cured" by performing qigong exercise. Studying various forms and performing them, he later discovered many ungodly demonic things happening to him and around him and that certain movements of qigong had to be performed correctly or else negative health consequences and mental disorders could ensue. He finishes his book by explaining that Christians should stay away from qigong and yoga as they are closely related, along with transcendental meditation etc. etc.
His book and experiences are very thought provoking for the Christian.
To sum it up, I had personally been interested in studying acupuncture and chinese medicine for a number of years, was accepted and moved to attend a reputable school, later to withdraw from the program before the semester began. This information that I had come across challenged my thinking about the truth and nature of chinese medicine, qigong, acupuncture and taoist philosophy.
I now hold to the opinion that acupuncture and chinese medicine is truly astrology combined with "medicine". The bible does have things to say about astrology, mediums, necromancy and consulting of those who practise these things etc. etc. I feel that as a Christian we really should take a look at acupuncture, chinese medicine and qigong for what they are and decide if it is something we should be introducing into our lives.
In my personal experience, I had to delay my dream of becoming a TCM doctor because I felt that as a Christian I could not participate in such things, unless I knew more about them. I am still learning and trying to keep an open mind, but it seems the more I learn, the more I feel deterred from the acupuncture profession.
Perhaps God has something better in store for my desire to be a healer.
Why Meditate At All?
posted by Tanongsak on 18 Mar 2011 at 10:51 pmTo those who think that meditation is helpful, I ask, helpful for what? What is it that you think you can accomplish by meditating that you can't accomplish in some other way?
I've been involved in many different forms of "Eastern" meditation, and can confidently say that most of the time, when Westerners take up the practice, it's quite harmless, simply because they're really not doing anything. Not that they're faking; they think they're doing something, but they're kidding themselves.
For those who actually get into a meditative state, and have various "experiences," I ask: how do you know these experiences, or states of consciousness are good? Where do they come from? Do you know? Are you so gullible that you're willing to believe some fast-talking "guru" who you think has your best interests at heart? I've had people tell me, "you just know," or "I know that I know that I know." That's the kind of rubbish one hears from the likes of Benny Hinn. In fact, you don't know anything; you're speculating. Recall the saying, "people who play with fire get burnt." And, when you dabble in things you don't understand, you've chosen to play with a very big fire.
Surely A Christian Is Aiming To Fully Embody Christ's Example?
posted by Matthew on 25 Jan 2011 at 10:46 amDirect experience of the truth is more important than theories. Take no persons opinion for granted. Even the Bible itself has been re-worded by man, so it is important that we take everything we read with wisdom.
In Christ's day there were many who called themselves "God fearing men", that were responsible for the brutal crucifixion of Christ. They did so because they loved power more than truth. Christ was allowed to die because people believed the slander of the pharisee's without questioning if it was true. They didn't look at Christ's actions but at opinion.
Direct experience is more important than opinion.
Fear of Hell is not a good reason to hurl accusations and curses. All that suggests is that you fear for your own safety, in which case you can't be living the way Christ did.
Lead by example not by giving opinion. Those who call themselves Christians but do not live as a true example are slandering the Christian faith by confusing others with their actions.
The Bible itself states that God is omnipotent. That means that those with good heart and motivation that "seek ... shall find", the very core of our nature cannot be free of the omnipotence of the ultimate.
Even Quantum physics is proving this. Chanting is something that one should be cautious of granted. We wouldn't invite someone in to our house if we didn't know them, so it's a good idea to research these things and be mindful of all that arises.
Christ said "You shall know them by their fruits"
In that case let me make it quite clear that I offer blessings to all of you. Because those that strike out in misunderstanding mostly "know not what they do". If Christ could offer this kind of love and forgiveness on the Cross ... what makes any Christian think they have the right to go around hurling curses???
Surely a Christian is aiming to fully embody Christ's example?
"God makes the rain to fall on both just and unjust"
Let me make quite clear here that I practice meditation. Just as many of the great prophets and model figures in the Bible did. All a person has to do is Google meditation Bible quotes to see literally hundreds of them ... because meditation is allowing transcendence of our perceptions and using that to see truth clearly. If that happens to be observing the true nature of The Bible's teachings, or compassion.
It is understandable to want to help others by sharing your view of the way, but this draws no-one to the path, only direct insight.
Let me be clear to all Christians reading this. If you genuinely believe your faith is valuable, know that to throw around curses, to live outside of the path Christ embodied is to push more people away from Christianity than to draw them to it.
How could anyone be inspired by such behavior.
In fact, it's the examples of compassion so prevalent in Buddhist practitioners that seems to be making it so popular now.
Another quote ...
"To those who do not keep my commandments I will say ... away from me, I never knew you, you who practice lawlessness"
To any Christian who does not embody Christ's compassion, one who didn't even rebuke Satan but gave it to God to do, beware of becoming one who practices "lawlessness".
You may be wondering now with so many quotes if I am a Christian?
To follow the way of Christ is more important than calling oneself a Christian. And to be honest enough to know when one is not. God is all knowing. It is the root of all creation. To lie to oneself doesn't make the truth disappear.

posted by jon on 6 Oct 2010 at 1:57 amhow close minded can you be? some of these posts are rediculous. i'm not trying to cause problems, but it seems like a lot of the people here can be classified as single minded Christians that curse anything remotely different from themselves.. A LOT can be learned from asian culture. if you look around the world, the balance of good and evil seems to be pretty constant regardless of religion. i do believe in god, i am a good person, i'm not a close minded fool that turns his head to anything unfamiliar.. and i'm not a member of the "occult". i do, however, practice meditation and embrace asian culture at my own leisure. for example.. how the heck could buddhism be satanic?!! look it up on the internet. it's not technically a religion http://www.buddhanet.net/nutshell03.htm which means it's possible to be a full christian that practices buddhism.
i am not buddhist, but practicing it would in no way hinder my belief in god or jesus christ.
i'm tired.. night
It's Simple!
posted by Paul on 13 Jul 2010 at 8:21 amMonotheistic religions have long taught that in order to become a "better" or "god-fearing" man, you MUST repent and or do right according to that particular religion, if not you will meet your undesirable afterlife. Right? Well, let me ask you this: How does one become a "better" man? One who is told with a wagging finger that you MUST do what is right, or else! Or, can anyone who has made human mistakes in his/her life take it upon themselves, search within and make a wholehearted life altering changes that will produce a "better" man through self awareness. To me this is a more sensible approach rather then applying pressure which can very rarely lead to betterment.
Open Mind - Meditation can take many forms
posted by MIke Chandler UK on 6 May 2010 at 4:04 pmMeditation can take many forms... do not dismiss it as it can lead you to some very profound truths. If you close your mind you will remain ignorant...but seek answers with an open mind and you will get answers.
Through a form of spiritual meditation that I discovered 10 years ago I have found that within us lie common archetypes which can be communicated with. It sounds incredible but time and time again I discover the same archetypes in all people no matter there race, colour or upbringing... of all the religious and spiritual information I have digested this is the only method where I have found a spiritual constant in all people. This constant transcends the individuals belief and seems to be incorruptable. We all have a board of directors within us that shape our lives and in order to understand and balance our lives we have to work with them... its a big ask to be open minded enough to actually do this but I am a determined fellow!
Learn To Spell - transcendental
posted by darlene shakemup on 2 May 2010 at 11:15 pmDo you even know what transcendental means? I'm hoping you still check this so you can see a thing or two, and seeing is knowing--as the latin language dictates--mr gold. your use of statistics is also inviting to criticism, as people often immaturely use statistics to aimlessly wash over and generalize an entire generation. face tattoos also "increase the risk of suicide" as many psychologist types would have everyone believe. Here's the thing. It's not the activity that makes one suicidal--it's ones own suicidal tendencies that lead one to an activity.
I understand that awakening the kundalini without real knowledge of self CAN and WILL often lead to suicide, however we must face the parallel truth that a baby born before it's mature enough will die in the same fire of prematurity. Think: is it time to lose your virginity to the other world--the astral plane--and psychically connect to the wonderful inspirations of infinite capability here on earth. Sun Ra once said, and I apologize for the summary, that we won't need teleporters or high speed interstellar travelling vessels in the distant future of our evolution...all we will need is to think of a place and time and be whisked to that location effortlessly. Now tell me mr gold, how do you expect us to evolve without a degree of "transendence"?
to the commenters. this post isn't about jesus or god or any of the bull you think is tangible. get over yourselvz and read something other than the bible for once. in fact, burn a bible and realize that God is not contained in physical objects, though some believe in churches and that is all right, as god permeates. it's like you haven't even read the damn thing...
Unconscious Behavior Is What Causes Harm
posted by Will Owen on 1 May 2010 at 4:21 pmWe all are connected to the source of love, which some call God. We are all given what we need to make decisions and to do the right thing. Fear causes ignorance, ignorance leads to violence, blaming a belief system, race or religion for unconscious behavior. Many religious people use their religion to enhance their ego and make themselves important. Fear keeps us stuck in unconscious behavior and that behavior is what causes us harm.
Followup To Jesus Is Lord:
posted by Brain in a Jar on 13 Mar 2010 at 9:49 pmTo respond to your final sentence, I'd say yes. Meditation is whatever you want it to be, really. If it helps you to find yourself, that's fine. If it helps you to deepen your relationship with God, that's just as fine. It's very open-ended. Granted, this is the same reason it can be dangerous, but I think if you come into it open-minded and hoping to gain any kind of improvement or purification from it, you will find it waiting for you.
I Highly Doubt That!
posted by Anthony Murkar on 22 Nov 2009 at 7:09 pmIt would seem that the 'Good 'ol God fearin' Americans' have failed to do their homework once again; meditation is not solely practiced by other religions. Catholics, Christians, Hindi, Buddhist: these are all religions which encompass meditation.
Before you denounce something as evil or 'UnAmerican' (I meditate - but that does NOT mean that I do not love my country).
This idea of non acceptance is why the rest of the world hates Americans - even Catholic/Christian nations. Look at Italy, for example.
Open your hearts to the world, and the world will open it's heart to you.
POWER/INFLUENCE
posted by Lucy Peters on 3 Nov 2009 at 4:18 pmThe more popular TM becomes in the world the more human beings will try and condemn it. There is an underlying current in society that if any human being or organisation becomes too influential on the masses they are taken out. For e.g. Princess Diana and Dodi Fied. Michael Jackson? Was he murdered too?
Do the christians who make the fear of god comments realise that Jesus of Nazareth was an educated priest but also a rebel and he feared no one. For this he was hunted down, along with his friend. Peter Zealot, they were hunted down by the Catholic Church because they had too much influence over the people.
Buddhist, British And Not Evil
posted by Andrew Paisley on 1 Sep 2009 at 4:01 pmI have been a practicing Buddhist for 5 years and meditate every day. In this context meditation means holding a virtuous object in the mind, such as love, compassion or a wish to refrain from non virtue, such as anger. Sometimes i chant mantras praying to help me become a compassionate and wise person and overcome my delusions. What's most important though is how I conduct myself in life. Buddhism has given my life meaning and joy..where once it was full of misery.
I go to interfaith meetings and people of different faiths meet and discuss our similarities and we love and respect each other. Lots of the things I have read here are very extreme and incite a lot of hatred. Isn't there enough suffering in this world!?
I hope that you all find peace and real love and compassion in your lives and in your hearts and I pray that all the darkness of ignorance within our minds is dispelled...the purpose of our lives is spiritual growth, not degeneration. The truth appears in many forms...Buddha was born in India and Jesus wasn't born in the USA..and no I'm not anti-America. Good is good. Our aim should be that all living beings are free from suffering..not burning, hanging, stoning and drowning..sadly these so called "holy men" will reap what they sow (we call this karma in Buddhism). I hope they see the error of their ways and use their lives to do good instead of harm. I wish love to all who read this.xx
What Is Dangerous?
posted by t.e. on 21 Aug 2009 at 2:42 pmWhat do you define dangerous? Anyone with a mind is capable of entering any realm of "danger" simply by thinking about it. Meditation isn't dangerous because satan is going to take over your mind, and it has nothing to do with being American of African or anything else. We are all human beings on the earth who have minds regardless of culture. The problem with emptying your mind out is simple: your emptying your mind.
Especially in American culture, the last thing we need is people emptying their minds. Most Americans don't think about anything as it is. The theory that the whole world should meditate because all problems will disappear is rubbish. Why? the whole world is NOT going to meditate not matter how hard you try. The way to take care of problems in the world is by USING your mind and collaborating with ideas and thoughts with other human beings to actually do something about it. By having the whole world abandon everything they currently do think about, whether its theology, philosophy, psychology, etc, is not going to help anything. It would simply turn the world into a mass of "new age" zombies walking around uttering phrases about how magical the universe is, while the rest of the problems that already exists, continue to exist.
Open Mind Is The Key
posted by Elizabeth on 11 Jul 2009 at 9:59 pmCome on, we are in 2009! its time to open our minds and respect people believes . If Christians are happy dancing and clapping to Jesus good for them, and if we are happy meditating, good for us, I'm not Christian, not religious but I believe in an intelligence that is everywhere and is within us and you can only experience it within you, is your own true. Just think outside the box. I think meditation is great and prayer also as in a way to getting in touch with God, Universe, Jesus, Life whatever you want to call it, at the end its the same "source" and Im sure it must be quiet funny for that Source to see all religions fighting , and defending of the name of" Jesus" what do we really know? and what do we know for sure? just be happy.
Religion = Superstition?
posted by S.W. on 23 Mar 2009 at 2:50 pmCould it possibly be that the Christian religion is based on a 2000 yr old superstition? The Bible has been rewritten and edited since it was found. Think on that.
Meditation
posted by michael on 16 Mar 2009 at 10:31 amMeditation is very good for the mind and body, in some cases,it can lead to stress release which is only the nervous system letting out the stresses which are deep within you. TM meditation is a very powerful technique and can lead to some people going through this which would lead them to think it bad. Through proper guidance one can go through this stress release leading to a better more calmer and richer life.
Religion has nothing to do with it, when people talk of demons, they are just stresses which live within us all.
every positive thought has a negative one underneath it.
Meditation is a key which can unlock the mysteries of the universe. If everybody meditated morning and evening all the worlds problems would disappear over night,we would live in harmony with each other.
I AGREE
posted by april on 4 Oct 2008 at 9:53 pmYES, Wouldn't it me nice if people would practice Christ like rather than chant they are christian?
I Have A Solution
posted by amused on 22 Sep 2008 at 5:44 pmChristians should not be allowed access to computers or the internet under any circumstances. The internet invites contention and slothfulness. Contains pornography and all manner of evil. It is Sodom and Gomorra for the idle hand. Cancel your subscriptions and burn your computers. It is what jesus would do. He wishes he could do it for you.
Fear
posted by jay on 14 Sep 2008 at 9:19 amIts amazing reading through theses comments, the amount of fear of the unknown displayed is fascinating, why are all the religious preoccupied by satan? It seems like they are more worried about the devil than more communed with their God? So its smells of fear.afraid of the unknown.
The TM Book For Sceptics - Peter Russell
posted by Raymond on 24 Jun 2008 at 4:35 amAnyone interested in researching TM could do well to read "The TM technique" by Peter Russell, otherwise known as "The TM book for sceptics".
Another fascinating book to read is "TM - An aid to christian growth" by Adrian B Smith.
Although there is a body of vedic knowledge available to anyone, TM does not promote changing your belief at all. On the contrary, practising TM will draw you back into the religion you know and complement it tremendously.
