Through representation by AARC member Brian L. Smith, BA, RRT, the AARC was able to deliver input to a new certification program under development by the Joint Commission for COPD care management in the ambulatory care setting.

The initial work of the group has now been completed, and a draft of the standards has been released for comment.

The Association urges members to review the "Advanced Disease-Specific Care Certification for the Management of Patients with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) in an Ambulatory Setting" draft and issue comments to the Joint Commission by the June 5 deadline.

"We want our members to know that Brian Smith participated in the development of these standards and we want to encourage them to review the standards and to comment on them through the Joint Commission's survey mechanism," says Bill Dubbs, MEd, MHA, RRT, FAARC, AARC director of education and management services.

The new COPD program will join other disease-specific certification programs offered by the Joint Commission, including another program on COPD and a program covering lung volume reduction surgery.
