The public is being warned that drink spiking is on the rise in Australia.

The Queensland Drug and Alcohol Foundation says drink spiking is becoming an increasing problem, especially at private parties.

Five people were taken by ambulance to a Brisbane hospital after suffering symptoms of drink spiking at two inner-city nightclubs overnight.

The foundation's chief executive officer, Bob Aldred, says people need to be very careful that they have their drinks in sight all the time.

"It seems to be mainly an excess of alcohol, but...when we see someone putting a drug into a drink it has a much more dramatic result...particularly if its GBH or fantasy that goes in...and then we see quite often [the victim] collapses and ambulances need to go out and to give aid," he said.
