UroToday.com- Happy patients are those that can watch their office cystoscopy procedure, allowing patients to watch their office cystoscopy on the monitor will reduce their discomfort during the endoscopic examination. Other investigators have shown that urethral lidocaine gel has no significant effect on patient discomfort during flexible cystoscopy. However, the Cleveland Clinic group randomized 100 male patients during office cystoscopy to visualize the video screen with the surgeon or not visualize the screen at all. Every patient received 2% viscous lidocaine intra-urethrally before the cystoscopy and then completed a visual analog pain scale after the surgeon left the room. The men who were allowed to visualize the cystoscopy had a 40% reduction in their visual analog scale pain scores compared to those who were unable to visualize the screen. Simply allowing patients to simultaneously view the procedure will reduce their discomfort and make the office diagnostic cystoscopy better tolerated. This is a simple but effective distraction technique for our patients.
