State Representative Josh Shapiro (D-Abington) recently authored legislation that would forgive young doctors 100% of their student loan debt if they agree to remain in Pennsylvania for at least ten years. Shapiro's legislation was co-sponsored by 30 Democrats and 15 Republican House Members.
Physicians from across Pennsylvania contacted P.A.P.A. to express their views concerning Rep. Shapiro's legislation. Many were pleased that Shapiro and other members of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives have stepped forward in effort to do something about Pennsylvania's physician shortage- although Governor Rendell vehemently denies the shortage exists.
Most physicians agree that though the legislation may attract students who would like to have their educational loans forgiven, it will not stop the medical liability lawsuit abuse that caused Pennsylvania's physician shortage.
The Politically Active Physicians Association applauds Representative Shapiro and his fellow Democratic representatives who had the character to stand up against Governor Rendell by declaring Pennsylvania is in fact under a physician shortage crisis.
