UroToday.com- Previous studies have demonstrated an increased incidence of renal cell carcinoma (RCC) in patients with end stage renal disease receiving dialysis and in patients that have undergone renal transplantation. Here, Ianhez and colleagues review their experience with RCC in a renal transplant population.
The authors examined the records of 1375 consecutive renal transplant patients to detect the incidence and outcome of RCC in this population. Eleven tumors were detected in 10 patients (1.37%). Of these, 90% were detected in the native kidney(s) and 10% were identified in the transplanted kidney (which incidentally was non-functional at the time). Six of the tumors were clear cell, 4 papillary and 1 was chromophobe histology. One patient had metastatic disease at presentation but the remainder had localized disease and underwent curative surgical resection.
The incidence of RCC is 15 times greater in the transplant population than it is in the general population. The authors recommend annual abdominal ultrasonography as surveillance for patients on dialysis and those that have received a renal transplant to detect incidental renal neoplasms at a time when they are potentially curable with surgery.
