Anxiety affects our whole being. It affects how we feel, how we behave and has very real physical symptoms.

It feels a bit like fear but whereas we know what we are frightened of, we often don't know what we are anxious about.

Mild anxiety is vague and unsettling - severe anxiety can be extremely debilitating. (See our other article "What is Anxiety? Symptoms and Causes").

What causes anxiety?

Anxiety is often triggered by stress in our lives. Some of us are more vulnerable to anxiety than others, but even those who become anxious easily can learn to manage it well. We can also make ourselves anxious with "negative self-talk" - a habit of always telling ourselves the worst will happen.

How will I recognize anxiety?

As well as feeling apprehensive and worried (possibly without knowing why), you may experience some of the following physical symptoms: It is easy to mistake symptoms of anxiety for physical illness and become worried that you might be suffering a heart attack or stroke. This of course increases anxiety.

When is anxiety a problem?

We all become anxious from time to time. It becomes a problem when it interferes with life in the absence of real threat, or goes on too long after the danger has past.

What if I just avoid things that make me anxious?

Avoiding situations that make you anxious might help you feel better in the short term. The trouble is the anxiety keeps returning, and has a habit of spreading to other situations. This can lead to you avoiding things like shops, crowded places, lectures or tutorials. So although avoidance makes you feel better -

OK, so what else can I do to feel better?

Anxiety can be exhausting and debilitating. Don't suffer alone for too long. It often helps to talk to a Counsellor or Psychologist, who can help you find ways to deal with stress in your life and teach you skills to manage anxiety.

First of all, Rule-Out Physical Problems. Then, Train Yourself, to Relax, and, Think Only Positive Thoughts.
Do NOT Dwell, on Negative Fears, and, Tell Yourself,
This, Is Only 'Temporary', and, It Will Pass, In A Few
Minutes. Believe it...IT WILL PASS ! Now Then, RELAX,
AND, LIVE YOUR LIFE !

Probably for the best...

Lets face it all the doctors are going to do is to give you some pills to turn you into a zombie to stop the anxiety... this is something that you need to see a counsellor for instead - they will help you to work out what is bothering you and why and will help you to learn to cope on your own. This will make you a stronger and happier person because of it - don't expect everyone else to solve your problems for you you need to take responsability for your own life however hard that may be. And no i'm notjust talking out of my backside - I have a lot of issues and have finally managed to face some of them and deal with them - lol still a long way to go but working out why I have such an issue is definitely the first step.

*hugs* you can do this but you don't have to do it alone - ask friends for help and if you don't have any that can help you then join groups that have the same interests as you and make new friends.

Can anxiety become a habit

posted by lee duploy on 23 Mar 2012 at 9:51 pm

Can anxiety become a habit, where and when does it start and can we learn how to cope with it?

The important issue is to define precisely by writing down what it is that actually worries you most and how you assume the situation will resolve iself.

In addition its important to clarify the risks as you see it to the outcome,ie fear of the risk as apposed to the actual risk.

How in other words do you define what the outcome of the probelm may be.

I have found in my many years of working with this problem that patients have simply forgotten or choose to forget objecitivity.

Anyone can have an opinion but ask yourself when you form yours, is it objectively or influenced by others who prefer a negative slant?

Why is a positive attitude to the problem important?

Becausen in the immagination the assumption is easier to form in a negative way than it is in a positive way.

The mind is easy to manipulate , here is a simple example of how the mind through association will jump to what is convenient .

If you were asked to answer this question below you will see this.

Answer me quickly "what do cows drink?

Invariable the answer is milk because we associate cows with milk.

By forming a habit of thinking negatively about issues that very often is blown out of all proportion, then anxiety becomes the subtitute by association , simply an association of negative thought and axiety....hence by association the smallest issue will become collosal sometimes to the extend where it is no longer possible to think of it in any other way.

I have worked in many countries and researched the 'anxiety phenomena" from Africa,Europe and now Asia what they all some to some extent to have in common is how we think of the problem.

To me a delayed flight may be a problem and yes its inconvenient but to make it a life and death issue is silly.

Notice however when this happens no more and more frequently the over reaction of angry passengers at airports.

This is called irrational assumption over reasoanble action.
Sometimes called entitlement fatigue.

An objetive analysis of the probelm is the answer,it does happen but is it the end of the world? no its not.

Here in simple form is my solution and avice to others...remember its an opinion but you may find it usefull.

In a group study with 12 volunteers here in Hong Kong over a period of six months interviewing people with severe anxiety we found that fear governed their lives.

It was dominated by fear that he world is a terrible place and their lives as aconsequince was out of control because of it.

Most were governed by fear, fear unrelated to reality.

A paper I wrote last year entitled "Fear defeats reason" descibes the phenomen of un objective assumption becomming suffiently habit forming through constant association.

The media has fosited on us this dramatic assumpotion that everything should be sensationalised.

In the study we found most volunteers lives were governed by television, the had lost track of what was real and what was fictuious, as a consequince every question was answered with a clouded perspective .

So here is the answer for what its worth.

Starting tomorrow set your alarm and when it rings jump out of bed, do not listen to any news be it on the radio or tv, do not whatever you do swtich on your phone or computer.
Be in change of your technology , not it in charge of you.
SSever all connection(overnight) with social networks get some real friends ( one volunteered we inteviewed had 398 friends, none of whom she had met) but not one real one.
Take time each morning to do a ten minute exercise, anything you want , not strenious but a subsitite from lying in bed and worrying.

ie. change your life in a simple an effective way by making a habit of thinking in a positive way by substituting non activity for actvivty.

life is hort and but one , make each day count ,learn the art of living in the here now by rational aiintention.

The Glass Facade

posted by lee du ploy on 23 Mar 2012 at 1:36 am

I have been researching that rare condition called prosopagnosia here in Hong Kong on which I wrote a paper and a book.
However more interesting is a phenomena which may be of interest.

During my research for the book I had the possibility interviewing a number of people who suffered from extreme longterm anxiety but as not yet depresion in the medical sense...what I found interesting is how each of these cases relayed their stories , with assumed images attached to their condition.

Invariable they were convinced that they actually saw a real
figure, either of someone whom they the assumed were somehow related to them.

The colours were specific and in most case studies we found a correlation between the assumption and the imagined, for them there was no difference.

This is pure conjecture but during the interview most cases subjects were able to discribe in detail the figure or image they saw, I was fortunate to have an art student translate their images onto paper.

Interesting enough once the immagined image was put in front of them , they made few alterations but accepted it more or less as complete, relaxed and accepted it.

'There may be room to explore in an art therapuetic sort of way ,their thoughts and anxiety's by painting what they think they see.
It certainly seemed to resolve some of their issues and they became physically less anxious.

If its of any interest I will galdly post some images of these case histories, however horryfying , they make interesting viewing.

Here is an simple examle of one without the image.

During a lifetime of devotion to her 66 year old husband and standing by him though thick and thin, the elderly patient was not surprised to hear her husband had died at the casino.

Although she accepted it with grace the fallout was rather more dramatic in that their debts were a complete shock to her, she realised immediatly that there was no way that she could cope with it.

She went into a downward spiral which she found hard to cope with.

Her anxiety so extreme that she dared not sleep and physically pinced herself to keep awake.

She could clearly see a large looming figure with a large head leaning over her each time she dozed off.

This eventually became an annoyance to her family which they found hard to cope with.

As far as they were concerned she had a vivid immagnation.

After some sessions she was able to descibe what she saw which was then inturn transcribed onto paper, after slightly adjusting the colour untill she was satisfied with the result, she visible relaxed.

Immediatly after it was accepted by us that the figure existed and that we were able to physically bring it to the fore, she went home and slept like a baby never for the iamge ever to appear again.

I hope you find this of interest

Why does anxiety even exist??

posted by Beverly Enoch on 31 Dec 2011 at 5:05 pm

I have dealt with anxiety since 2003 because it seems because I joined a stupid program. Anxiety eventually brought on agoraphobia. I have put up with four panic attacks since 2004. What the hell is going on!!! Should I get the hell out of America?? I shake, tremble, and one millions things may roam my mind? Why is this??

I also had a job in which I believe I just overly worked myself (trying to be an over acheiver) or maybe working like silly so that I wouldn't have gotten fire! The job paid more than any other job that I'd had before, but trust me! The job could have paid one million an hour and I still would have quit!!! In which I did eventually. The job wasn't worth it.

Me, too

posted by Stephanie on 17 Dec 2011 at 5:31 pm

I have anxiety, but want to thank everyone who have posted their anxiety stories. Part of what makes me feel better is that I'm not alone. I think certain thoughts, but people don't understand. I read that 4 million people suffer from anxiety. Prayerfully, there are treatment options. From personal experience, exercise and relaxation techniques do work. I personally walk my dog and partake in yoga. I didn't realize how much they helped until I increased stress (signed up for night classes) and missed my yoga classes. I'm getting back on track and realize how stress can be managed and that for me, meditation and prayer to God helps keep things in perspective. Love the phrase "This too shall pass."
Best of luck to you all. If you believe in prayer, pleas pray for me to have peace. Thank you.

Ziad. You are a people pleaser, not a bad thing to anyone but you, and you worry about whether you are doing your job to your bosses satisfaction.Do you have hemherroids aswell?I bet you do. And a lot of gas?
If it is possible, you should talk to whoever you work for and form a list of whatever tasks or time worked, that your boss expects from you each day, in order for them to feel satisfied with your productivity. If there is no way you can do it, either,1. He is being greedy and lying about what he thinks you should be capable of and you should leave. Or 2, if it so that you simply can not perform to what is a fair delegation of duty, you should leave the job.
If you meet the requirements, Great, then you can relax, knowing he is happy. Then you are happy.
Try to remember who around you is worth rushing for or worrying about. Would any of them do the same for you?Don't expect too much from yourself, especially when people that don't matter are concerned.
Your health and well being are more important to you, than whatever you THINK others expect from you. Stop giving pieces of your being, to people who don't care or appreciate it. You are your own boss. Take care of yourself as nobody else will. They are too busy deciding what others think of their output anyway.
Take an extra long slow walk during your break. Listen to the birds and breathe the air that is yours for free, around you to breathe. When you go home each day. Pack up all your work, everything you are working on, the whole lot, and put it neatly in something portable, and stick it in a closet somewhere at work. Don't think about it till you arrive next.
Cheers
Kerry
