The last few years has brought hope and relief to autoimmune disease patients, as new recombinant proteins that work directly on immune system effector cells have entered the marketplace. The current generation of biological response modifiers (BRMs), a group that includes Enbrel, Humira and Remicade, are quickly becoming the gold standard of care for some of the most common forms of arthritis, including rheumatoid arthritis and psoriatic arthritis. These three drugs have achieved so-called 'blockbuster' status, and strong demand will continue for the remainder of the decade, with the total value of this drug class reaching $11.1 billion in 2009. Healthy growth in autoimmunity extends beyond BRMs. The current class of drugs for multiple sclerosis - a group that includes the interferons and glatiramer - will reach a total value of $7.4 billion in 2009. As these drugs receive approvals for expanded indications, their prevalence - and autoimmune patient reliance - will increase further.
Several autoimmune disease segments are closely linked to - and from the standpoint of therapeutic research and development to a significant degree dependent on - other segments. Arthritis, because of its market size and economic importance, is often the therapeutic target for pipeline therapies in this sector, while other disease segments (e.g. Lupus) benefit from new drug therapies almost exclusively through secondary or expanded indications. The outlook for the psoriasis segment is closely linked to the commercial market for arthritis treatment, due to the significant prevalence of psoriasis patients to suffer from psoriatic arthritis. A survey conducted by the National Psoriasis foundation in 2002 found that psoriatic arthritis was three times as common as previously believed, with as many as one million people afflicted with psoriatic arthritis in the U.S. alone.
