Most of us have experienced hiccups, an uncomfortable, sometimes embarrassing, but usually short-lived experience. But sometimes hiccups persist for a long period of time and can be a sign of serious underlying disease.

What Are Hiccups?

Hiccups are bursts of inspiratory (breathing in) activity. The muscles we use when we take in a breath are the intercostal muscles situated between the ribs, and the diaphragm - a sheet of muscle below the lungs.

Most simple cases of hiccups come after eating or drinking too much or too quickly. The stomach, which is situated right below the diaphragm, becomes distended and irritates it. This will cause the diaphragm to contract, as it does when we breathe in.

Sometimes hiccups will occur because of a disturbance to the nerve pathways from the brain to the muscles involved. This explains why hiccups may occur with temperature changes or emotional situations. It is also the reason that a sudden shock can sometimes abolish an attack.

Persistent hiccups may signify problems in the brain, spinal cord or any of the structures around the diaphragm or chest wall.

Everyone has their own pet remedy for curing hiccups. Simply holding your breath is often effective. Breathing into a paper bag, the best remedy, increases the amount of carbon dioxide in the lungs, relaxing the diaphragm and halting the spasms.

The magic word

My dad told me to say grapefruit. Me being the know-it-all that I am admediatly said it. I hiccuped. Then he said "no. You have to pernounse it clear in sylybols. I did and it worked. It's all in the mind though. If you think it works than it does. I wouldn't reccomend this for yourself, but for others if they have hiccups. Works every time. They'll start to think your a magician.

Hiccup Tricks

posted by Paige Batten on 31 Mar 2012 at 8:12 pm

I get hiccups extremely often because I eat or drink too quickly. One night, at dinner, I got a really bad case of hiccups and my father blurted out of nowhere, DR. PHIL NAKED!! Now I know what that sounds like, now you probably like my father is a pervert but I am telling you, he;s far from one, he was just being silly. But I'm telling you, if you blurt this out when a friend or family member has the hiccups, they will either become so disturbed that they're scared, or they will start laughing histerically, and their hiccups will completely go away. Now if saying Dr. Phil naked doesn't work, there are many substitutes. Just think about who the person who has the hiccups dislikes and say (their name) naked!! And then their hiccups are gone. WARNING!! You may have to try several different things before you can get this to work but after you find one that either makes them disturbed or laugh histerically, there hiccups will VANISH!! CAUTION!! DO NOT USE THIS METHOD AROUND SMALL CHILDEREN FOR IT MAY CAUSE SEVERE SIDE EFFECTS!! I tried it on my three year old cousin and now she thinks it's funny and walks around her house screaming 'OPRAH'S NAKED!! OPRAH'S NAKED!!' My aunt was very mad at me for that. But I'm telling you, this method almost always works!! Try it if not for getting rid of your friends hiccups, for a good laugh. TRY IT!!

Hiccups that hurt

posted by Samantha on 12 Oct 2011 at 10:23 pm

I have the hiccups right now, and I'm laying down. Why does it kind of hurt to hiccup?
I know this may seem like a dumb question, but I'm about to go to bed so cut me some slack.

Hiccups - amazing cure for a classroom of students

posted by Ted on 16 Apr 2011 at 2:48 pm

my high school economics teacher had an AWESOME cure for getting rid of a student's hiccups. if the student couldn't get their hiccups to stop on their own in 30 seconds, they had to come up to the front of the class and sing the Barney song. worked every time.

Water can work

posted by Zach Padgett on 13 Apr 2011 at 9:19 am

I don't know the science behind it, but it seriously works, get a glass of water, but a clean dish rag or towel over the top of the cup, and drink the water through it. Its a little difficult the first time, and kinda messy. But if you drink at least half a glass of water that way your hiccups will be gone.
