Roche's powerful new cure for acne, Roaccutane, which is thought to have serious side-effects, is at the centre of fresh controversy following the publication of another study into the drug that notes the drug causes serious foetal abnormalities.
Roche says the drug should only be given to women if they have had a negative pregnancy test within two weeks of starting treatment, yet research carried out by the Acne Support Group (UK) showed that more than two thirds of women surveyed who had been prescribed the drug had not been offered a pregnancy test by their doctors.
As well as foetal abnormalities, the drug can cause skin and eye problems, aches and pains and depression.
