Although fewer women in North Carolina are smoking and dying from heart disease and stroke, more than 16% of women do not have health insurance, including 63% of Hispanic women, according to a report released Wednesday by the Center for Women's Health Research at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill, the Raleigh News & Observer reports. The 2007 North Carolina Women's Health Report Card examined changes from 2001 to 2005 in women's health-related issues, including reproductive health, preventive care, chronic disease and mental health. The report rated changes on an A through F scale, according to the News & Observer.

The report found that more women in the state are receiving cancer screenings, but cases of diabetes, high cholesterol and obesity are increasing. In addition, the report found that an increasing number of women are experiencing post-partum depression and clinical depression, especially black women.

Lt. Gov. Beverly Perdue (D) said the state should take action to change the report's findings. She said her goal is for North Carolina to be the "healthiest state," adding, "Every time we see one of these report cards every two years, it's up to us to make the state of those statistics better, more positive" (Astigarraga, Raleigh News & Observer, 7/26).

The report is available online. Note: You must have Adobe Acrobat to view the report.
