The newly extended version of the BAFTA award-winning documentary Malcolm and Barbara: a love story will be broadcast on Wednesday 8 August, ITV1, 9 - 10.30. This heart-rending film follows Malcolm's journey from being a highly skilled composer, husband and father to the last years of his life.
Alzheimer's Society comment on Malcolm and Barbara: Love's Farewell:
'Malcolm and Barbara: Love's Farewell gives valuable insight into the battles thousands of people with dementia and their carers face everyday. Sadly, Malcolm and Barbara's journey is not unique, 1 in 3 older people will end their life with dementia.
'Dementia is more than just memory loss; it robs people of their lives and has a devastating impact on families and loved ones. Malcolm and Barbara's decision to film their journey in its entirety was one they made together to raise awareness of this harsh reality. We hope their brave decision will shine a light on the fact that dementia is a terminal condition that is currently desperately under funded and misunderstood.'

Loves Farewell
posted by Donna on 9 Aug 2007 at 1:32 amI watched the documentary last night about how Barbara coped with Malcoms Alzimers. I found it to be the most moving programme I have ever watched. I am not a person to watch other peoples grief, but I was intrigued on what Alzimers actually was and how it affected people.
I was astounded on what happened to Malcolm and what Barbara had to do to ensure that he had some type of stable homelife throughout his illness. I found Barbara to be very brave and the account of how it affected them both was very well produced.
I watched the programme right to the end and throughout most of it I was crying my eyes out! I could see the pure frustration of Barbara and often glimpses of how tormented Malcolm must have felt.
It really has opened my eyes to what Alzimers is all about and I feel that the family are very, very brave to let the world see what actually happened. I can thank them for a very steep learning curve on Alzimers. I found it so moving that I am going to sign up to donate to this very worthy cause. I also believe that more suitable respite care is required for this disease and the carers involved, simply putting them into a home and doping them to their eyeballs so that they are unable to walk and function is not a reasonable option.
