The American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry (AACAP), is pleased to announce the winners of the 2007 AACAP Sidney Berman Award for the School-Based Study and Intervention for Learning Disorders: Michael E. Faran, M.D., Ph.D., and Albert Saito, M.D. This award recognizes child and adolescent psychiatrists who have shown outstanding leadership in the public education and treatment of learning disabilities. Drs. Faran and Saito were selected by the AACAP Schools Committee after a competitive process.

Drs. Faran and Saito, of Honolulu, Hawaii, collaborated with Dr. Mark Weist, director for the Center for School Mental Health Analysis and Action at the University of Maryland, to create the Solomon Wellness for Education Program at Tripler Army Medical Center. The program is a model for school-based prevention, early intervention, evaluation, and treatment of military dependent children.

Since its inception in 1985, the Solomon Wellness for Education Program has grown to include a wide array of mental health services and training for Tripler Army Medical Center's child and adolescent psychiatry fellows. The program has been noted for its significant, supportive mental health services during times of heavy troop deployment.

Drs. Faran and Saito will present their work at an Honors Presentation at the AACAP's 54th Annual Meeting at the Sheraton Boston Hotel in Boston, Massachusetts (October 23-28).

Albert Abramson, president of the Abramson Family Foundation, established The Berman Fund for the Study and Treatment of Learning Disabilities to honor Dr. Sidney Berman for his dedication to child and adolescent psychiatry and research on learning disabilities. A founding member of the Academy, Dr. Berman was president of the AACAP from 1969 to 1971.
