The National Asthma Campaign today (4 May) became known as Asthma UK. The charity's new name marks its renewed drive to increase awareness of asthma and the needs of people whose lives are affected by it.

Donna Covey, Asthma UK's Chief Executive, said: 'We believe "Asthma UK" clearly communicates that we are the country's dedicated charity for people with asthma. It demonstrates that asthma is our expertise and will make our services - such as our adviceline, staffed by asthma nurse specialists - easier to find.

'We will continue to build on our work with people with asthma, healthcare professionals and researchers to develop a better understanding of the condition and to promote improvements in care for the 5.1 million people in the UK with asthma.'

To mark the launch of Asthma UK, the charity has published 'Living on a Knife Edge', a new report highlighting the experiences of the 2.6 million people in the UK with severe asthma symptoms.
