Jeroen de Munter and colleagues found that, in women in the US Nurses' Health Studies, whole grain intake was inversely associated with risk of type 2 diabetes. The association was stronger for bran than for germ.

Public Needs To Be More Informed
posted by S. Jones on 5 Sep 2007 at 11:47 amSeveral years ago I was diagnosed with reactive hypoglycemia, commonly associated with the future onset of Type 2 Diabetes. Because I went to a Dietician who specialized in Diabetic issues, I became educated in the association of poor eating habits with health issues. I am constantly amazed that in the U.S. people continue to eat garbage and junk food and then wonder why their health is failing.
The medical community should become more educated on these connections and should insist that the insurance companies cover education for the public in order to save future claims for preventable illnesses. Parents should stop caving to the demands for junk food by their children and feed them a proper diet from their infancy. It is a crime that I cannot go in my grocery store and find a real "whole grain" bread product - they only have products with some whole grain added. I buy my breads from a nutritional store and insist that only whole grain breads be used in my home.
