Median compensation for U.S. primary care physicians increased by 2% to 171,519 in 2006, compared with a 3.2% increase in the inflation rate, according to an annual survey released on Monday by the Medical Group Management Association, the Denver Rocky Mountain News reports. The survey, which included responses from 50,000 health care providers, also found that median compensation for specialists increased by 1.7% to $322,259 in 2006.
William Jessee, president and CEO of MGMA, said, "Patients can expect to feel the pinch right along with practices as physicians in some specialties see more patients each day for incongruous pay." Among nonphysician providers, median compensation for nurse practitioners increased by 4.5% to $73,480 in 2006, and median compensation for physician assistants increased by 4.7% to $79,104, the survey found (Davis, Denver Rocky Mountain News, 8/28).
