Art Opens Door For Indigenous Psychology Students, Australia

An exhibition of artwork by leading Aboriginal artists will be held in Brisbane from 23 - 30 September with proceeds going directly to support indigenous psychology students.

The exhibition, titled Bendi Lango (meaning 'cutting edge' in traditional Woiwurrung language), will feature works ranging from $2,000 to $50,000 by some of Australia's most celebrated artists including Jimmy Nerrimah, Cory Surprise, Ngoia Pollard, Dennis Nona, Minnie Pwerle, Gloria Petyarre and other artists from communities throughout Northern Territory, Western Australia and Queensland.

"Following the success of the inaugural Bendi Lango exhibition held in 2006, the Australian Psychological Society (APS) is pleased to present its second exciting exhibition and sale of modern indigenous art."

"The APS is committed to addressing the current shortages of indigenous psychologists by offering bursaries to help meet financial needs for students to complete their postgraduate degree in psychology."

"Indigenous health workers understand the needs of indigenous Australians addressing both cultural and spiritual needs and fulfil an essential role in the provision of health care," says APS President, Amanda Gordon.

Curator Jenny Hillman from Waterhole Art has travelled widely to select the works specifically for Bendi Lango 2007. "We are delighted by the calibre of the exhibition, which includes works by the recipient of this year's Telstra National Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Art Award, Dennis Nona."

About the Bendi Lango Art Exhibition Foundation

The Bendi Lango Art Exhibition Foundation was established in 2006 to address the imbalance of indigenous psychologists by offering bursaries to alleviate some of the financial concerns students may experience in seeking to complete a tertiary postgraduate professional degree in psychology.

The inaugural recipient of a scholarship was Belle Glaskin, from Curtain University in WA. Belle has been awarded a scholarship to help fund her masters program in psychology.
