The Medical Protection Society (MPS) has recently been contacted by members in response to concerns that junior doctors risk being referred to the General Medical Council (GMC) if they decide to move jobs.
Dr Stephanie Bown, Director of Education and Communications said:
"The threat to junior hospital doctors of referral to the GMC as a result of exercising a choice about their future training simply adds insult to injury, especially at a time when it is nationally acknowledged that their treatment by the shambolic MMC scheme has been disgraceful.
"Junior doctors have been denied the opportunity of a fair appointment system and one which would enable them to pursue the careers for which they are best suited. Once again the most junior members of the profession appear to have been singled out for thoughtless and insensitive treatment. We hope that common sense will prevail, but members can be confident that MPS will defend them robustly should the need arise.
Commenting on the Department of Health's statement, Dr Bown said:
"This misses the point completely and once again reflects a worrying lack of understanding of the plight of junior doctors. In what other field of employment does an individual face regulatory sanction for changing their mind after accepting a post which they are not necessarily suited for."
