General Practice Students Network will receive a 1 million dollars funding boost from the Commonwealth Government to promote general practice as a career choice.
The funding will be provided through General Practice Registrars Australia to support campus events and activities such as mentoring, career nights, peer-to-peer sessions and GP forums as well as a national web site and publications.
GPs are critical to our health system. Establishing mentoring between registrars and medical students should promote the discipline in the same way that a good clinical placement in general practice does.
Funding will cover:
- local activities at medical universities, including engaging medical students in general practice;
- national coordination and organisational setup, including IT support, a national marketing coordinator, staffing and infrastructure;
- a range of communication and marketing activities, including newsletter, printing, website development, telecommunications costs; and
- enabling student board members to attend national meetings.
The government-established company General Practice Education and Training (GPET) Ltd will provide the funds for this initiative until December 2009. GPET manages the regional vocational education and training provided to general practice registrars enrolled in the Australian General Practice Training Program.
