Democratic Presidential Candidate Clinton To Announce Health Care Proposal, Says 'Political Consensus' Necessary For Reform

Presidential candidate Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton (D-N.Y.) on Monday plans to announce her health care proposal at a campaign event in Des Moines, Iowa, Reuters/Washington Post reports (Reuters/Washington Post, 9/13). Clinton has provided no details of the proposal.

However, at a forum on Wednesday hosted by Yahoo!, Slate and the Huffington Post, she said, "I intend to dramatically rein in the influence of the insurance companies because, frankly, I think that they have worked to the detriment of our economy and our health care system" (Kornblut, Washington Post, 9/13). Clinton added, "A plan is necessary but not sufficient. We've got to have a political consensus in order to withstand the enormous opposition from those interests that will have something to lose in a really reformed health care system" (Reuters/Washington Post, 9/13).

According to the Post, "her opponents are gearing up to undercut her message by pointing out that she ultimately set back the movement for health care overhaul by failing during her husband's administration and has done little to remedy it while in office in her own right" (Washington Post, 9/13).
