KPBS' "These Days" on Thursday included a discussion with Kenny Goldberg -- a KPBS health correspondent who received a fellowship to attend the 4th IAS Conference on HIV Pathogenesis, Treatment and Prevention conference in July in Sydney, Australia -- about Australian programs to reduce the spread of HIV among injection drug users and commercial sex workers.

The KPBS segment also includes excerpts of Goldberg's interview with Dennis Altman, a professor at La Trobe University in Australia, about differences in the U.S. and Australian governments' approaches to needle-exchange programs and sex workers.

Altman said, "I think what happened in Australia was we were very lucky in the sense that the epidemic began at a period when we had a very strong progressive federal labor government, which actually drove a number of [HIV/AIDS] policy initiatives."

The segment also includes excerpts of Goldberg's interview with an Australian sex worker (Fudge, "These Days," KPBS, 9/27).

Audio of the segment and a transcript of both interviews are available online.
