Commenting ahead of the launch of Lord Darzi's interim report Our NHS, Our Future, which includes the announcement of a new Health Innovation Council, King's Fund chief executive Niall Dickson said:

'An additional investment of up to £100 million on innovation in health services must be welcomed.

'It is true that take-up for new technology has sometimes been patchy across the NHS. But we really need to see further detail of how this proposed new body will operate alongside the other organisations currently charged with the assessment and promotion of best practice in the health service.

'It has not yet been made clear how the creation of yet another central organisation will help.

'Generally we know which innovations work, the challenge has always been getting them adopted. What we need is to create the right incentives locally that will encourage those commissioning and delivering care to adopt best practice as defined by NICE.'

The King's Fund is an independent charitable foundation working for better health, especially in London. We carry out research, policy analysis and development activities, working on our own, in partnerships, and through funding. We are a major resource to people working in health and social care, offering leadership development programmes; seminars and workshops; publications; information and library services; and conference and meeting facilities.
