Nurses experiencing financial hardship will now be able to apply for grants from a new fund administered by the Royal College of Nursing (RCN). The Mayday for Nurses Fund - made possible by donations from scores of Premiership footballers - will be open to all registered nurses in the UK.
The new fund was set up to accept donations from the Mayday for Nurses campaign; the brainchild of political economist Dr Noreena Hertz, who asked premiership footballers to donate a day's pay in recognition of the vital role nurses play in society.
The fund will be open to applications from registered nurses in the UK who may be experiencing hardship due to a range of factors, including;
- during a prolonged period of ill health
- following a divorce or separation where there are children
- when facing an unexpected, essential cost
- during a dispute with an employer
- during a period of unemployment.
Dr Peter Carter, General Secretary of the Royal College of Nursing, said: "This new fund will give financial support and offer a helping hand to nurses in times of hardship and times of need. I'd like to publicly applaud all those professional footballers who dug deep and gave generously".
Nurses who are interested in applying for the Mayday for Nurses Hardship Fund should contact 0207 647 3880 or email maydayfornurses@rcn.org.uk.
