The American Medical Student Association (AMSA), the nation's largest, independent medical student organization, is proud to announce that Immediate Past President Jay Bhatt has received the 2007 Jay S. Drotman Memorial Award from the American Public Health Association (APHA).
Bhatt is a fourth year medical student at the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine. He served as AMSA's national president during 2006-2007. He serves on the Governing Council of the APHA and on the Bureau of Communications at the American Osteopathic Association. He also serves on the boards of the American College of Preventive Medicine, Physicians for a National Health Program and Justice Speaks. Bhatt is a National Health Service Corps scholar, honoring his commitment to the underserved. Bhatt holds a Bachelor of Arts in Economics from the University of Chicago and a Masters in Public Health from the University of Illinois at Chicago.
The Jay S. Drotman Memorial Award was established to recognize the career of a promising young public health professional or student. The award was officially established in March 1979 by Peter Drotman, M.D., M.P.H. in memory of his late brother and is presented annually by the APHA. The APHA is the oldest, largest and most diverse organization of public health professionals in the world. This year's award will be presented at the APHA Annual Meeting on November 6 at 6:30 p.m.
"I feel truly honored to have received this award. I thank AMSA National President Dr. Ehlert for nominating me and my mentors who have contributed to my development in public health and medicine, including Paul Wright, Dr. Gopal Sankaran, Dr. Patch Adams and Dr. Paul Farmer," says Bhatt. "My experiences with AMSA and APHA, among other organizations, were and continue to be instrumental in shaping my growth, values and commitment to the very best in public health and patient advocacy."
