Jill Buyon, MD, Professor of Medicine and Vice Chair, Department of Rheumatology at the New York University (NYU) School of Medicine, has been selected by her peers to receive the prestigious Evelyn V. Hess Research Award given annually by the Lupus Foundation of America, Inc. (LFA). The award recognizes a lifetime of achievement in lupus research. Dr. Buyon is internationally recognized for her basic and clinical research on lupus, including achievements in the study of neonatal lupus and pregnancy in lupus. She is widely published, with over 100 peer-reviewed journal articles, 12 proceedings, and 50 reviews/chapters to her credit, along with one book.

Dr. Buyon has received grants for ongoing basic and clinical projects in lupus from the National Institutes of Health as well as the American Heart Association. She is a member of the American College of Rheumatology, the American Federation for Medical Research, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and serves on the editorial board of Lupus Now®, the LFA's national magazine.

In 1985, Dr. Buyon founded the Lupus Clinic at the Hospital for Joint Diseases (HJD) in New York, which she currently directs, along with her position of Director of the Lupus Study Group. She is also an investigator at the Institute of Molecular Immunology at the NYU-HJD. The LFA established this award in 2005 to honor Evelyn V. Hess, MD, MACP, MACR, for her outstanding contributions to lupus research over the course of her long and distinguished career. Dr. Buyon will receive her award on November 7th in Boston during a reception scheduled to coincide with the American College of Rheumatology's Annual Scientific Conference.
