The American Diabetes Association (ADA), in conjunction with members of the Congressional Diabetes Caucus and CVS Pharmacy, will host a briefing Thursday, October 25 at 9 a.m. in 2168 Rayburn House Office Building to discuss the recent "Day with Diabetes." ADA sponsored the day to illustrate what it's like to live with diabetes and keep it properly managed. In August, Reps. Mike Castle (R-DE), Co-Chair of the Congressional Diabetes Caucus, and Zack Space (D-OH) were "diagnosed" with type 1 and type 2 diabetes, respectively, and were shadowed throughout their work days by constituent ADA volunteers who live with the disease. CJ Jones, who has had type 1 diabetes for 30 years, and Bertha Garbrandt, who has had type 2 diabetes for nine years, will speak about their perspectives shadowing the Congressmen.

Also speaking at the briefing will be Rep. Diana DeGette (D-CO), Co-Chair of the Congressional Diabetes Caucus; James Schlicht, Executive Vice President, Government Affairs and Advocacy, ADA; and Rusty Ring, Senior Vice President Government Affairs, CVS.

Diabetes is the fifth deadliest disease in the U.S. and a leading cause of heart disease, stroke, kidney disease, blindness, and amputation. Nearly 21 million American children and adults have diabetes and 54 million have pre-diabetes.
