Health Net, Inc. took to heart this year's theme of Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger and First Lady Maria Shriver's Conference on Women - "Remarkable Lives. Remarkable Legacies. What's Yours?" Health Net is an official sponsor of the 2007 conference.

To support the theme, the company developed its conference sponsorship around the idea of "Taking Charge of Your Health Care Legacy." For example, each attendee will receive a pedometer so they can track their physical activity at the conference, and going forward, as they go about their busy days.

"Women are master multi-taskers - and frequently face challenges in their caregiver roles. We often take care of our families' needs first - both our children's and our parents' - and consider our own needs last," said Karin Mayhew, senior vice president of Organizational Effectiveness for Health Net, Inc. "But our children learn by example, and our parents depend on our strength as they age. By taking charge of our own well-being first, we'll be ready to take care of those who depend on us."

Seventy-three percent of Health Net's workforce is female, with 61 percent in supervisory management positions.

To help attendees take charge of their health care legacies, Health Net teamed up with Whittier-based Presbyterian Health Physicians, one of 280 physician groups in Health Net's provider network, to offer five health screenings - blood pressure, body fat, waist circumference, total cholesterol and glucose - and will be encouraging those screened to follow-up with their personal physicians, if necessary. As part of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, staff will be available at the conference booth to educate attendees on how to perform a proper breast self-exam.

"Knowledge is power. Health screenings are a critical first step in identifying potential health risks," said Marvin I. Rice, M.D., president of Presbyterian Health Physicians. "We are pleased to work with Health Net and the Women's Conference to provide these important services."

Health Net created a booklet - Wellness by the Numbers! - for the conference. Many times health care decisions are difficult because there is too little time or too much information. The booklet provides attendees a starting point from which to organize their health care and an opportunity to learn more about nutrition and healthy lifestyle choices that affect their health and the health of the people they love.
