Elekta (STO:EKTAB), a global leader in radiation oncology and non-invasive neurosurgery solutions, announced Elekta Infinity*, the definitive new digital linear accelerator optimized for delivering Volumetric Intensity Modulated Arc Therapy* (VMAT), a very fast Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT) treatment delivered in single or multiple arcs, at the 49th Annual Meeting of The American Society for Therapeutic Radiology and Oncology (ASTRO). The meeting is being held October 28-November 1, at the Los Angeles Convention Center.

In the Elekta booth, Jay Hoey, Executive Vice President Product Creation at Elekta and CEO of IMPAC Medical Systems, announced the new Elekta Infinity, which more precisely targets tumors and protects surrounding healthy tissue, while drastically reducing radiation therapy treatment times.

"Elekta is committed to fighting serious disease and improving quality of life," says Hoey. "The Elekta Infinity with VMAT demonstrates this by benefiting patients with dramatically shorter treatment times and highly precise tumor targeting."

Elekta VMAT improves on IMRT technology

Utilizing Elekta's VMAT solution greatly improves on existing IMRT technologies and offers a faster alternative to helical tomotherapy. Elekta's VMAT solution, when used with Elekta Infinity, varies the radiation beam during treatment by simultaneously manipulating the gantry position and speed, MLC leaves, dose rate and collimator angle.

This provides several distinct advantages over current IMRT techniques, specifically the ability to deliver more radiation to the target while sparing healthy tissue in significantly less time than existing therapies. In addition, Elekta Infinity combines VMAT with VolumeView™ 3D cone beam imaging to create high-contrast images with ultra-low dose.

Patients benefit from faster treatments, reduced radiation

Elekta Infinity allows for a total VMAT treatment session in no more than five minutes, including true VolumeView™ 3D cone beam images in three minutes and two minutes of highly conformal arc delivery of radiation. Head and neck treatments - including daily 3D imaging - can be delivered in less than five minutes with Elekta Infinity. Coupled with the Elekta Infinity system's clinically proven ultra-low 3D imaging dose, the speed of VMAT treatments can reduce the whole body dose of patients receiving treatment. Elekta Infinity also protects patients with real-time control point to control point monitoring throughout the process.

Due to the ability of Elekta Infinity to also treat in non-coplanar angles and non trans-axial planes, the system can yield similar or improved dosimetric performance compared to helical tomotherapy.

More solutions from Elekta

In addition to Elekta Infinity, Elekta is exhibiting other solutions for boosting clinical efficiency at ASTRO. Elekta's complete stereotactic portfolio is featured, as well as innovative and time-saving products from the Elekta Group.
