WHY:
Dental implants are the hottest procedure in dentistry, and the best option for replacing damaged or missing teeth for patients from adolescents to seniors. Implant growth in the US in has skyrocketed due to increasing awareness that implants last a lifetime and are more than 97 percent successful. But the real story is how implants can restore both oral function and cosmetic appearance and improve the quality of life for many who though they never could eat normally again. The AAID annual meeting is the venue for cutting edge, evidence-based implant research presentations and demonstrations of state-of-the art implantation techniques. Some 1000 implant dental practitioners are expected to attend. Highlights include:

* Sophisticated, almost life-like, digital imaging and minimally invasive, computer-guided surgery enhance the convenience, precision and predictability of implant procedures. Exciting new digital imaging systems generate anatomically accurate images of the mouth, face and jaw for building computer models. This reduces time (for some, teeth in an hour are possible) required for implant surgery and lowers risks for implant rejection or other complications. At the AAID meeting, leading implant surgeons will explain and demonstrate how ultra-precise digital imaging and computer models are making implant surgery more desirable, convenient and successful.

* Is It Wise to Save Questionable Natural Teeth? Anyone considering implants asks this question when deciding what to do about weak or decaying teeth. "The days are over for saving teeth till they fall out," says AAID speaker Dennis Tarnow, DDS. "Preserving questionable teeth in the esthetic zone is not the best option if the gum line has to be raised too high. Tarnow will review the latest clinical methods to determine when its best remove a tooth and insert an implant in the smile zone.

* Are Implants for Everyone? As the population ages, record numbers of patients living with complex medical conditions will seek restorative dental care. Michael Glick, DMD, will talk about key issues for providing safe and effective dental implant care for patients with conditions such as osteoporosis, diabetes and cardiovascular disease.
