In the UK the debate about how best to determine nurse staffing levels has not reached any conclusion at national level.
The conventional wisdom continues to be that staffing levels is something best left to local level management, taking account of local workload and resources.
However this "bottom up" philosophy has now been challenged by a fundamentally different approach - the use of "top down" standardized, and mandatory, nurse: patient ratios.
This report, A Certain Ratio? Minimum Staffing Ratios In Nursing (Word doc), examines the characteristics and early results of the use of staffing ratios in the two health systems where nurse staffing ratios are now mandatory - the states of Victoria (Australia), and California (USA). It then discusses the implications of using ratios within a UK context.
