An award acknowledging the New York State Nurses Association (NYSNA) as a "Health Care Reform Pioneer" was presented by the Universal Health Care Foundation (UHCF) at a reception held in Manhattan on Tuesday, Oct. 30. "This award recognizes the steadfast leadership of NYSNA and its officers in the fight for universal health care through adoption of a position statement, contact with public officials, testimony, and support of other reform organizations such as Rekindling Reform," said Louis Levitt, chair of the UHCF.

The UHCF is a newly established organization focused on delivering public education about the need for quality, affordable, and accessible healthcare for all. NYSNA President-elect Karen Ballard sits on the group's board of directors.

With more than 34,000 members, NYSNA is the oldest and largest state nurses' association in the nation. It is an influential union for RNs, representing nurses in New York and New Jersey. Offering a wide range of services to its members, NYSNA fosters high standards of nursing education and practice and works to advance the profession through legislative activity. It is a constituent of the American Nurses Association and of the United American Nurses, an affiliate of the AFL-CIO.
