Wednesday 14 November 2007 is World Diabetes Day, and Diabetes UK Leicestershire voluntary groups and local diabetes teams are celebrating in style.

People are encouraged to dress in blue (the official colour of World Diabetes Day) and walk from Leicestershire's clock tower to the Town Hall Square on the evening of 14 November. They will arrive to see the Town Hall lit up in bright blue light.

All over the world, more than 85 iconic buildings will be illuminated blue on the day, including the London Eye, the Eiffel Tower and the Empire State Building.

World Diabetes Day aims to raise awareness of the seriousness of diabetes and the impact it has on approximately 246 million people worldwide. Blue represents World Diabetes Day because it is the official colour of the UNite for Diabetes campaign, which last year saw the United Nations (UN) pass a resolution recognising diabetes as a major threat to global health.

"This is the first World Diabetes Day since the UN's landmark diabetes resolution," said Dr Peter Swift, President of the Diabetes UK Leicestershire Parents' Group.

"In some parts of the world, people are dying needlessly because their diabetes is not diagnosed in time or they are not receiving proper treatment. You can make a difference by spreading awareness and supporting us in our World Diabetes Day activities."

To show your support, join us at the Clock Tower at 6.30pm on World Diabetes Day.
