• Kentucky: Democratic challenger Steve Beshear on Tuesday defeated incumbent Gov. Ernie Fletcher (R) in the state's gubernatorial election with nearly 60% of the vote and by a margin of 18 percentage points, the Louisville Courier-Journal reports. Beshear pledged to work with Democrats and Republicans and said that he hopes for a time when all children will have health insurance and the elderly will not have to choose between food and prescription drugs (Gerth, Louisville Courier-Journal, 11/7).
  
  
• Mississippi: Incumbent Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour (R) on Tuesday defeated Democratic challenger John Arthur Eaves in the state's gubernatorial race, the Jackson Clarion-Ledger reports. Barbour led the election with 58% of the votes, with 98% of the state's precincts reporting. Barbour called his victory a "mandate" to continue the policies he started during his first term. Barbour in a recent interview said that he wants to determine ways to make health care more affordable, such as pooling small businesses to make premiums less costly for employees (Chandler, Jackson Clarion-Ledger, 11/7).
