Islamic Relief Worldwide recently announced that it will host an international HIV/AIDS conference in Johannesburg, South Africa, that aims to generate practical responses to the disease from an Islamic perspective, South Africa's Sunday Tribune reports. According to IRW, an increasing number of Muslims are being affected by HIV/AIDS, including those in South Africa.

The International Consultations on Islam and HIV/AIDS aims to "halt the spread of the disease and to ensure appropriate care for the people who have been affected by it," Abdullah Vawda, a spokesperson for IRW, said. "The disease devastates individual lives, as well as communities and is increasingly affecting Muslim populations," Vawda said, adding that the conference will draw on the expertise of Muslim scholars, HIV/AIDS advocates and people living with HIV/AIDS. The conference is scheduled from Nov. 26 to Nov. 30 in Johannesburg, the Tribune reports (Naran, Sunday Tribune, 11/11).
