Trainee dental care professionals who are due to qualify before 30 July 2008 can get a head start on registration and take advantage of the 2007 GDC registration fee of £72, so long as they apply before the end of this year.

The registration fee goes up to £96 on 1 January 2008, but trainee dental care professionals can submit a completed registration application before 31 December and pay the current fee.

Edward Bannatyne, GDC Operations Director, said

"This special offer is designed to encourage and motivate dental nurses and dental technicians who are coming to the end of their training to apply early, well-ahead of the July deadline. Come on, get those forms in. You can only gain by applying now. We don't want anyone to miss the boat."

The same arrangement is also open to trainee dental hygienists, dental therapists, clinical dental technicians and orthodontic therapists who are due to qualify before 30 July 2008 and need to register before they can work. Whether the offer is financially beneficial for them will depend on when they want to start work following qualification - in their first year of registration they pay less the later in the calendar year they register (in 2008 the first registration fee is £8/month). It is therefore not going to be an attractive option for these groups to take advantage of this 'apply now' offer if they will receive their qualification and register after 1 April 2008. Individuals who want to practise before April will have to pay more than £72 (see table below), so applying now on the current fee will be an attractive option for them.

First registration fees for dental hygienists, dental therapists, clinical dental technicians and orthodontic therapists in 2008

Month of first registration Proportion of ARF paid Fee for 2008 (to year end) January* 12/12 £96 February* 11/12 £88 March* 10/12 £80 April 9/12 £72 May 8/12 £64 June 7/12 £56 July 6/12 £48 August 5/12 £40 September 4/12 £32 October 3/12 £24 November 2/12 £16 December 1/12 £8 * Dental hygienists, dental therapists, clinical dental technicians and orthodontic therapists who apply in January, February or March will pay more than £72.

DCPs in training who send in their application now won't be registered until they send in a copy of their qualification certificate. This must be received by us no later than 30 July 2008. They will then be officially entered onto the Dental Care Professionals Register.

DCPs who take advantage of this offer, but later do not obtain their qualification, will be able to request a full refund.

Notes:

The GDC does not register student dental professionals. Students enrolled on a GDC-approved training programme can work without being registered with the GDC until they have finished their studies.

Trainee DCPs who apply for registration by the end of 2007 on this basis and pay the 2007 fee but then fail to qualify by the July deadline will need to re-apply once qualified, paying the fee current at that time.
