AAMI's 2008 Annual Conference is still eight months away. But behind the scenes, preparations are well under way.

The conference - which will be held in San Jose, CA, May 31-June 2, 2008 - will include up-to-date and practical guidance on issues ranging from asset tracking and staff development practices to imaging radiation issues and risk assessment and management.

Highlights include educational sessions on preventing tubing and catheter misconnections (the subject of a Joint Commission Sentinel Event Alert last year), demystifying IT, radiation safety, codes and standards compliance in clinical engineering, and organizing your biomed department. Also, back by popular demand, Joint Commission representatives will discuss a wide range of Joint Commission-related issues with participants.

The conference will also offer attendees a first-hand look at the world's newest medical devices. More than 100 exhibitors have already signed up to showcase cutting- edge products and services. Having spent weeks evaluating, discussing, and poring over potential sessions, the 2008 program committee recently met face-to-face to finalize the conference program. The results of these efforts - and more throughout the year - will be seen in San Jose.

"As a new member of the program committee, I was blown away by the amount of work and consideration that goes into each and every topic selected by the committee," says Paul Kelley, CBET, biomedical engineering manager for Washington Hospital in Fremont, CA, and a member of AAMI's Technology Management Council (TMC).

According to Glenn Scales, patient safety specialist with the Duke University Health System and a 2008 program committee co-chair, "with representatives from across the country having vast areas of expertise, this year's program committee boasts a diversity that truly represents our industry. With the quality of the program we have developed, the conference is shaping up to be the most successful meeting in AAMI's history."
