The Eye Bank Association of America (EBAA) announced the renaming of its research grant program to be called the Richard Lindstrom EBAA Research Fund in honor of Richard L. Lindstrom, MD of Bloomington, Minnesota.

Dr. Lindstrom has been instrumental in funding the EBAA research grant program since its inception in 1990, said Edward J. Holland, MD, chairman of the EBAA. From 1992 to 2007, a total of 68 grants have been made totaling more than $565,000. Also instrumental in support of the program has been Bausch & Lomb, Inc.

"Dr. Lindstrom has been one of my mentors since I trained with him," said Dr. Holland. "His support and generosity are just additional examples of how Dick Lindstrom has benefitted corneal surgery, corneal transplantation, and ophthalmology. Through his efforts , this research funding is ongoing and will support future breakthroughs in corneal surgery. " he added. Dr. Lindstrom currently serves as President of the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery.

The research grants support studies in eye banking, corneal transplant techniques, and new corneal surgery. They also support young investigators' travel to the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology's (ARVO) annual scientific meeting.

The EBAA, head quartered in Washington DC, is a not-for-profit organization of eye banks dedicated to the restoration of sight through the promotion and advancement of eye banking. The oldest transplant association in the United States, the EBAA is a nationally recognized accrediting body for eye banks. Since 1961, EBAA member banks have restored sight to nearly 1,000,000 individuals.
